EVOLUTION OF MONETARY POVERTY IN THE APURÍMAC REGION OF PERU BEFORE AND AFTER COVID-19: 2017–2024

The study aimed to analyze monetary poverty in the Apurímac region of Peru before and after COVID-19, between 2017 and 2024. The research has an analytical approach whose objective was to analyze the evolution of monetary poverty in the Apurímac region from 2017 to 2024, in the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The specific objectives include: (a) characterizing the situation of monetary poverty before the pandemic, (b) analyzing the impact of the health crisis on poverty indicators, and (c) comparing the evolution of monetary poverty in the study period, identifying the main explanatory factors of the observed changes. The methodology included the comparative analysis of socioeconomic indicators, time series analysis, and evaluation of public policies implemented during the period. The main findings show that, although poverty in Apurímac gradually decreased until 2019, the pandemic caused a notable increase in monetary poverty rates, highlighting the structural vulnerability of the region. The subsequent recovery has been uneven and requires specific policies that address the structural and situational causes of poverty. The study concludes that the impact of Covid-19 exacerbated existing inequalities, making it imperative to strengthen social protection mechanisms and economic diversification to achieve an inclusive and sustained recovery.
