Towards More Moderate and Substantial Thought: The Transformation of The Prosperous Justice Party's Doctrine

Abstract

This study examines the internal transformation of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), focusing on changes in its ideology within Indonesia’s democratic context. Using a qualitative approach that combines document analysis and in-depth interviews with party elites, this study traces the historical evolution of the PKS’s ideological orientation. The findings show that the PKS’s transformation reflects not only strategic adaptation to electoral competition, but also a gradual shift in its ideological orientation and political strategy since the late 2000s. The party moved toward a more moderate, inclusive, and context-sensitive interpretation of Islamic politics in response to democratic and societal pluralism. However, this transformation does not represent a full transition to post-Islamism, as the PKS continues to maintain a strong Islamic ideological foundation. These findings highlight the importance of doctrinal change in explaining how Islamic political parties navigate the tension between ideological commitment and democratic competition, thus contributing to broader debates on the evolution of political Islam, beyond binary perspectives.
