CHALLENGES FACING THE APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: AN APPLIED STUDY ON THE EMPLOYEES OF NAJRAN UNIVERSITY IN THE NAJRAN REGION

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the extent to which employees at Najran University are aware of the importance of implementing artificial intelligence (AI) at the university. It also aimed to identify the challenges facing AI implementation at Najran University and how to overcome them, and to determine if there were significant differences in the responses of the study participants attributable to personal characteristics and job-related variables. The study employed a descriptive survey methodology, using a questionnaire as the data collection tool. The questionnaire was distributed to all 686 employees of Najran University, of whom 170 (24.7%) responded. The data were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. The study concluded that employees' awareness of the importance of implementing AI at Najran University was high. It also found that the challenges facing AI implementation at Najran University were significant. Furthermore, no significant differences were found in the average responses of the participants regarding the study's central theme (the importance of implementing AI) based on demographic variables (gender, age, educational qualification, job level, and years of experience). The results also showed significant differences in the average responses of the sample regarding the study's central theme (challenges facing the application of artificial intelligence) according to the variables of age, educational qualification, and years of experience. However, no significant differences were found in the average responses of the sample regarding the same theme based on gender or job level. This study offered several recommendations, most notably: the university should utilize artificial intelligence (AI) applications based on employees' understanding of their importance and how to leverage them in the workplace; the university should provide training courses for employees on how to effectively use AI technologies; the university should integrate AI courses and their various technologies into its curriculum to prepare students for a future increasingly reliant on these technologies; the university should establish partnerships with technology companies to develop customized solutions that meet its needs; and it should encourage collaboration between different academic departments to develop multidisciplinary research projects that utilize AI. Furthermore, the university should enact laws governing the application of AI and ensure effective digital and cybersecurity. Finally, the university must provide the necessary resources and funding to implement AI applications.
