PROFILE OF CURRENT BLOOD GLUCOSE EXAMINATION USING THE HEXOKINASE METHOD IN DIABETES MELLITUS (DM) PATIENTS BEFORE UNDERGOING CATARACT OPERATION AT EYE RAMATA HOSPITAL DENPASAR

Abstract

Blood glucose is sugar in the blood which is formed from carbohydrates in food and stored as glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscles. Hormones that influence glucose levels are insulin and glucagon which come from the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes mellitus has been associated with insulin resistance, a compensatory state due to persistent increases in insulin production. This condition causes long-term hyperglycemia which causes diabetes complications. Diagnostic criteria for DM by looking at the following symptoms: Symptoms of diabetes plus blood glucose concentration ≥200mg/dl or fasting glucose ≥126mg/dl or HbA1c level≥6.5% or two-hour plasma glucose≥200mg/dl for the oral glucose tolerance test. Cataract is clouding of the lens of the eye. Due to aging and several other conditions, the protein structure changes, causing some areas in the lens to become cloudy. This situation can cause decreased vision. Most people can suffer from cataracts, and their prevalence increases with age. This type of cataract may be seen in people who have other specific diseases, including diabetes. The Hexokinase method is a diagnostic method for measuring glucose concentration in different body fluids. The precision and accuracy of this method make it one of the most widely used methods for plasma glucose estimation. This research concluded that there were normal distribution results for age and blood glucose levels in patients with DM who were going to undergo cataract surgery at Ramata Eye Hospital.
