COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE WITH HERBAL MEDICINE IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS AT PURWAKARTA HOLISTIC HOSPITAL IN 2023-2024
Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) is a chronic metabolic disease with high prevalence in Indonesia. Its management involves conventional therapy using oral antidiabetic medications or insulin, but long-term use can cause side effects and patient non-compliance. This has increased interest in herbal therapies as an alternative or complementary treatment. The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of conventional therapy with herbal therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: This study employed a comparative-quantitative analytical design with a retrospective cohort approach. Secondary data were obtained from the medical records of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Purwakarta Holistic Hospital from December 2023 to December 2024. The sample consisted of 204 patients, consisting of 102 patients in the conventional group and 102 patients in the herbal group. Key variables included HbA1c levels, fasting blood glucose (FBG), and random blood glucose (RBG) before and after therapy. The analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test and the Chi-square test with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: Both groups showed decreased levels of HbA1c, FBG, and RBG after therapy. However, more significant improvements were found in the conventional group compared to the herbal group (p<0.05 for all parameters). Despite this, the herbal group still showed significant declines, especially in FBG and RBG, although not as large as in the conventional group. Conclusion: Conventional therapies have been shown to be more effective in lowering HbA1c, FBG, and RBG levels in patients with type 2 diabetes compared to herbal therapy. However, herbal therapy still provides meaningful improvements and has the potential to be a complementary approach, especially in patients who prefer a natural or integrative approach.
