PERCEIVED STRESS AMONG PARAMEDIC STUDENT POPULATIONS: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Background: Stress among paramedic students is globally documented as a significant concern, with research showing elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress symptoms in this group. A small number of studies have focused on its impact on students.  Purpose: To critically examine existing research that investigates how stress influences the undergraduate paramedic students’ academic performance and overall educational experience. Materials and Methods: A structured integrative review was executed following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Relevant studies were searched through PubMed, EBSCO/CINAHL, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. After rigorously applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, ten (10) selected articles were examined using a qualitative approach, with an emphasis on content and thematic analysis to identify common patterns and insights. The entire review process was conducted between January 15, 2026, and June 30, 2026.  Results: Ten (10) studies matched the specifications and were incorporated in this review. Subsequently, there are four (4) main themes related to clinical trauma exposure, educational climate, social media factors, and emotion regulation were determined. The literature consistently emphasizes significant strengths, including optimized quality of patient care, reduced medical errors, strategic collaboration, stricter adherence to established protocols, and immediate correction.  Conclusion:  The current documentation insinuates that stress among paramedic students is very high. The review highlights both its valuable insights and the operational problems institutions may face. These results pave the way for strong demand for more comprehensive and conscientiously conducted studies to assess the credibility of this instructional approach and how persistent constraints can be addressed.
