ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN THE STRATEGIC REPOSITIONING OF ISLAMIC HIGHER EDUCATION: THE ROLE OF INSTITUTIONAL ETHOS, ISLAMIC IDENTITY, AND STUDENT AFFECTION
Abstract
This study aims to examine the influence of institutional ethos, Islamic identity, and student affectivity on the strategic repositioning of Islamic higher education from an Islamic Religious Education perspective, with a specific focus on Muhammadiyah University Jakarta. Purpose: This study addresses a gap in the literature, as existing research rarely integrates Islamic educational values, institutional ethos, and students' affective dimensions into discussions about the development of Islamic higher education in a global context. Methods: A quantitative research design was employed, with a survey of 140 randomly selected students. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, tested for validity using product-moment correlation and reliability using Cronbach's Alpha, and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS. Findings: The results show that Islamic identity and student affectivity have a significant and positive influence on the strategic repositioning of Islamic higher education, while institutional ethos has no direct influence. However, institutional ethos contributes indirectly through its positive influence on student affectivity. Among the variables studied, Islamic identity emerged as the strongest predictor, shaping students' affective engagement and educational orientation at Islamic higher education institutions. Implications/Originality: This study highlights the central role of Islamic Religious Education in institutional transformation by conceptualizing strategic repositioning as a values-based educational process, not simply a managerial initiative. By integrating classical Islamic educational perspectives with contemporary dynamics of higher education, this study contributes to the advancement of Islamic education studies and offers insights into strengthening Islamic identity and student affective engagement in the sustainable development of Islamic higher education in a global environment.
